Pelvic Health 101

When we talk about pelvic health, it’s like opening a book to a chapter many of us skim over, not realizing the depth and impact it has on our daily lives. This intricate aspect of our well-being touches on everything from how we move to how we relax, and yes, even how we go to the bathroom. Speaking of which, bladder and bowel health plays a starring role in this narrative. The drama of constipation, leakage and/or the rush of urgency are more than just discomforts; they’re signs that our pelvic health needs attention. And let’s not forget the plot twist brought on by certain beverages – our morning coffee or evening glass of wine might be the secret culprits increasing those urgent trips.
But here’s where the plot thickens: the myth that the pelvic floor is always weak and in need of strengthening. The truth is, sometimes it’s quite the opposite; an overactive pelvic floor can lead to a host of issues, including pelvic pain and difficulties with both bowel movements and urination. It’s a reminder that our bodies aren’t always in need of tightening up; sometimes, they’re pleading for a moment to relax.
Beyond this, the realm of pelvic health is riddled with further myths and misunderstandings. Take, for example, the belief that pelvic floor issues are an inevitable part of ageing or childbirth. Or the notion that these concerns are solely a woman’s domain, disregarding the significant number of men impacted by pelvic floor dysfunctions. These myths do more than spread misinformation; they silence conversations and delay seeking help.
Diving deep into pelvic health means untangling these myths, understanding the signs our bodies send us, and recognizing that care in this area is as varied as the individuals who need it. Whether it’s relearning how to relax certain muscles, adjusting our diets, or simply becoming more mindful of our daily habits, there’s a wealth of strategies we can employ to support our pelvic health. Let’s bring this chapter into the light, exploring it with curiosity and care, and remember that our journey towards better health is always a personal one, filled with its own stories, challenges, and triumphs.
